Our Lab:

Serving Colorado growers is the core focus of the CSU Wheat Entomology Program. We conduct surveys for common pests, expand IPM options, and engage with our local community. As part of the Nachappa lab, we are committed to providing useful and high-quality data. Our program has two main research focuses:
  • Wheat stem sawfly: The wheat stem sawfly (Cephus cinctus Norton, WSS) is the most prevalent wheat pest in Colorado. For over a decade, our team has monitored its spread and evaluated management strategies. We partner with breeding specialists, other universities, and government agencies in a collaborative effort against this insect. See our Research page to learn more about our current projects.
  • Aphids, mites, and other pests: While sawflies are currently the most severe wheat pest, we continue to monitor for outbreaks of other insects. We communicate with growers when populations reach economic thresholds and provide management recommendations.
